What is an Apostille?

An Apostille is an official certification issued by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) that authenticates the origin of a public document — such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate or court order — for use in a foreign country.

Apostilles are only valid in countries that are signatories to the 1961 Hague Convention. There are currently over 120 Hague Convention countries, including the United States, Australia, France, Germany and most of Europe.

What is embassy legalisation?

For countries not covered by the Hague Convention — including China, UAE, Saudi Arabia and many African nations — documents require a more complex process called embassy legalisation (also known as "chain of authentication").

This involves notarisation, followed by FCDO certification, followed by authentication at the relevant country's embassy in London. The process and requirements vary significantly by country.

When do you need an Apostille or legalisation?

Overseas property purchase

Documents such as power of attorney, title deeds and corporate resolutions often require Apostille for use in foreign property transactions.

Working or studying abroad

Educational certificates, criminal record checks (DBS) and professional qualifications typically need Apostille when used for overseas employment or university applications.

Marriage overseas

Birth certificates and single status declarations often require Apostille for use in foreign marriage registrations.

International business

Company documents such as Certificates of Incorporation, articles of association and board resolutions may need Apostille or full chain legalisation for overseas use.

Visa and immigration applications

Many countries require Apostilled personal documents as part of visa, residency or citizenship applications.

Court and probate proceedings

Documents for use in foreign legal proceedings or international probate processes often require full authentication.
